Benefits of the Woodcock-Johnson III Tests of Achievement
Anything that you deem is worthy of your time and money should be personally beneficial. Your annual achievement testing and end of grade testing can do more than just meet the State’s requirements. Home school families have several well known tests that they can choose from. You may be wondering what sets the Woodcock-Johnson III apart from the others. The Woodcock-Johnson III Tests of Achievement was first published in 1977 and within educational and psychological communities it is considered the model of how a test should be developed. Revisions have been made as more has been learned about intelligence. The Woodcock-Johnson III has a unique format which provides you with a more in depth and comprehensive assessment of your child's academic progress. Here are some of the benefits of using the Woodcock-Johnson III: • Testing is conveniently offered year round and can be scheduled to fit your family’s busy life style. Some home school families choose to use the WJIII as an end of year test in the spring or early summer. Other families prefer using the WJIII mid-year. This allows parents to clearly see how their family is progressing. New homeschooling families will benefit from testing before purchasing their curriculum. • A child works individually with a trained test administrator . Children enjoy the encouragement and attention they receive in a comfortable setting free of the distraction of other students working. • All children experience success and show you what they have mastered. Each WJIII test contains work for every grade level from pre-k through college. All children begin working at a pre-determined point with work that they will feel confident with. Children who are working ahead have the opportunity to show mastery of advanced work at higher grade levels. Children who are delayed in an area begin with work that they are confident with and then proceed to show you what they have mastered. This child will have the opportunity to do work at higher grade levels in the areas that he is most confident in and not feel frustrated by being given work that he has not mastered in his weaker subject. You will have a more accurate portrayal of where your child is independently working. This information is valuable as you plan and choose curriculum that will be most beneficial for each child. Private schools have valued the information that they have gained through the Woodcock-Johnson III as an admissions and end of year test. They find the grade placements provided within the score reports to be accurate. • Each subtest only measures your child’s proficiency in that area. As well as receiving broad over all scores, you are given an accurate portrayal of where your child is working in specific areas. For example, delayed readers can still do well with Applied Math Problems. The word problems are read to the child as they follow along. Area public schools refer their students to Lighthouse Educational Services when they are being considered for AIG services in reading and or math. • Answers are given both orally and written in a workbook . The child will not be transferring information to a bubble sheet. All written responses are placed in a workbook. Children with motor difficulties can type their answers on their laptop. • Accommodations can be made for children with physical and developmental needs. Professionals highly recommend this test for children with ADHD, are autistic, and for those who have physical and developmental needs. • Most of the subtests are not timed. • Testing is completed in about 1 ½ hours . Parents find that this fits conveniently into their busy schedules. • Scoring is immediate. Score reports are computer generated with the latest updates provided by Riverside Publishing and the creators of the Woodcock-Johnson III Tests of Achievement and Cognitive Abilities. • Accurate grade placement is provided on the score reports. Since children can work at their own level in each of the tested areas you receive accurate grade placement scores. For example, let us say that you have a third grade child who scores 7.4 in reading. You will know that your child can read and understand work that is given within a seventh grade classroom during the fourth month of that school year because they were given the same work that would have been given to children in the seventh grade. Other achievement tests cannot give you that information because they do not include seventh grade work as part of their questions on a third grade test. • Scores are given that show where your child is working when they are not timed as well as when they are timed. Each section of the Woodcock-Johnson III is comprised of three subtests. One subtest measures your child’s skills, another subtest measures comprehension, and the third subtest measures fluency. The fluency subtests are the only timed portions of the test. All of your child’s work is measured in the Broad Scores. Other cluster scores are also given. One set of these is the Brief Scores. The Brief Scores are a reflection of your child’s skills and comprehension in that area. They are the untimed portions of the Woodcock-Johnson III. Parents find it helpful to compare the untimed Brief Scores and the all inclusive Broad Scores. • Woodcock-Johnson III scores are accepted throughout our nation. • Lighthouse Educational testing consultants are available to work with you in your home, at one of our central locations, or with groups at a place that is convenient for you and your friends .
